Would you sell your soul for Total Control?
One of the most wonderful things about what happened just after Punk happened is that otherwise dead smoochy, end-of-disco, slow, please-don’t-snog-me songs suddenly became edgy and intense. And really very cool indeed.
And this little beaut is the best example of that kind of Big Ballad I can think of. The majestic Total Control by The Motels. Lead singer Martha has that kind of almost-mocking sob-by voice, half Chrissie Hynde, half Lene Lovich. Brilliant! And it’s one heck of a sob story. Post-punk blub-tastic.
